Dear Angler,
At our home on the Yakima River the river flow has dropped down
to very fishy levels and the fishing is
beginner friendly now with good dry fly fishing and easy wading.
We also started something new this month. Check out
our "Lonely Water Dates", there are a few select dates that are a
great value for guided trips on the Yakima River. Also, if you are
in the market for new waders be sure to take advantage of the
Simms "Wader Trade In" special. You can
trade in your old leaky waders for an instant discount on a new set of
Simms Gore-tex Waders.
The biggest news for September is that the Methow and Wenatchee
Rivers opened on September 8th! This was a special early
opener due to strong runs of Steelhead making their way back up the
rivers right now. We are excited to be hosting guided trips for
summer Steelhead on both rivers every day! Our guide staff is
ready to net a few Steelhead for you. This opening is any
Steelhead fisher's dream, whether it is your very first fish or your
fiftieth; our staff is ready to show you a great time and teach you how
to catch Steelhead on a fly rod! You can use a single handed rod
or a spey rod, as these rivers offer both advanced and novice anglers a
great opportunity at hooking multiple steelhead every day.

Fishing Information
On the Klickitat River, there has been great fishing lately and
we have a few dates left in our riverside camp so act now, just fair
warning!
Fishing Forecast
What a great time of year we have coming up on the Yakima River. Terrestrial insects
and Summer Stoneflies are reaching their climax and are still found in
abundant numbers along the bank. Hoppers, Bees, Ants, and Crane Flies
are also available to the trout and should not be overlooked as
productive dry fly patterns. This might not mean fishing a fly
that looks "exactly" like one of these but the leggy creations in your
box are each and every trout's fantasy this time of year! Cooler nights
promote steady mid day hatches and encourage the trout to feed heavily
during “banker’s hours” which is something that would have been unheard
of in July or August. Many seasoned anglers would contend that
September and October are two of the best months on the Yakima, many
guides would agree. There will be healthy numbers of October Caddis by
mid September in the Upper River and Farmlands. The Lower Canyon will
be soon to follow and should produce consistent Blue Winged Olive
hatches by the end of September.
Wade
Fishing... Finally!
The high summer flows and the Yakima are subsiding which invites anglers
out to wade fish the Lower Canyon and enjoy great access to some of the
best trout water in the west. During the summer it is next to
impossible to wade but by mid-month the water will be very low and
manageable on foot. It also makes the boat fishing very beginner
friendly.
Yakima River
Hatches

Female Summer Stones be found in abundant
numbers in September as they hurry to finish the egg laying process.
The Summer Stonefly will be very active through most of September.
There seems to be a "2nd Hatch" of these bugs late in the summer as
water temps begin to drop and stimulate activity from this bug.
Other flies to note: Blue Winged Olives #18-22, Cahills #16/14,
Mahogany Dun Mayflies #16, Midge #20/22 (best fished with a Brassie or
WD-40 #20), and of course.... the October Caddis! In addition to
this, there are many varieties of smaller Caddis and Sedge in the #14-20
range making September and October one of the most diverse months of
hatch fishing on the Yakima River.

Sage VXP Fly Rod Review and Information
We recently had the
opportunity to cast the new Sage VXP fly rod that recently came out.
It is a great all around rod. It is reminiscent of it's "kissing
cousin" the timeless XP whose obsolescence brought more than a few tears
to the cheeks of anglers hoping to increase their quivers with a few
more of these fine machines. This rod replaces the VT2 which has
grown quite a following as well.
Sage felt the time had
come to make some drastic improvements to the VT2 series rods and when
making this consideration, took the popularity of the old Sage XP into
account to develop the Sage VXP. This is not the old XP tapers we all
loved but a new taper based on the XP that is better than ever.
With ultra high line speed
and a super slender shaft design that reduces the overall weight, each
and every VXP in this series is super smooth and extremely responsive.
Each rod has a varying taper for the weight an length so they feel great
across the range of line weights and lengths.
Super fast action with
slim ferrule technology makes this rod the perfect choice for all-round
fishing and casting. Shadetree green blanks are apportioned with hard
chrome snake guides and a pewter color, uplocking reel seat with wood
insert on smaller line weights and an anodized aluminum reel seat,
double lock rings and 1'' fighting butt on heavier models.
As expected, the rod performed well in the grass out in front of our
lodge and had the feel of a much more expensive rod. We cast the
690-4 and it was a dream. The Z-Axis will be getting a run for its
money after the introduction of this rod. Before buying another
rod of any type, be sure to give the VXP a try.
