Yakima River // Winter Fishing report

December 23, 2020

Bogey (Nymph Ninja) and I got the chance to sneak out on the water before headed to work this morning. While the temps remained below freezing and we had to clear ice from the guides a handful of time we can both agree, time spent fishing is time well spent.

Location:  Put in at Red's and took out at Lmuma

Anglers:  Dallas (Shceduling Director) & Bogey (Shipping Manager)

Time:  We fished early morning before the work day from 8:30am - 10am

Catch Resuls: During our short float we landed 2 fish in the 12-16 inch range. The bite did not pick up until around 9:30am and I think primarily had to do with a fly change (read below).  Being that we were fishing on the wrong end of the day, as afternoons offer peak water temps and just after daylight are the coldest, it was a productive pre work session!

Flies: Chrome Chironomid Size #16, Roza Pink Tag Size #14, Spanish Bullet Frenchy Size #14. The Pink Tag produced both our fish today and is a great winter variation of the Roza Red and Purple Tags.

Estimated Hunger Level: On a scale of 1-10, 10 being lights out I would say the fish hunger was about a 3 or a 4. I think we were a little early in the morning as the temps were still below freezing.

Featured Tackle: Bogey and I were fishing a Sage Sonic 590-4 with a Scientific Angler Anadro Nymph 5WT line on it. If you haven't got your hand on the Sonic yet, you need to. Every time I get a chance to fish it I have a smile on my face.

While fishing was still on the slower side you can't really complain, I mean you are fishing right? If you are looking to go out this winter I would reccomend waiting until the sun is at the highest point and focus your time and energy on softer water that is about walking speed.

  1. Crap!! The Chrome Chironomid secret is out. This fly often produces fish for us on the Yak. This summer we heard from one of the shop guys "So that's what your going with? A chrome Chironomid???" But I'm tellin' you guys it works. Also that Spanish Bullet or the "Bobby Special" as we like to call it is also a great fly.
