The Guide's Dictionary

(509) State of Mind- The euphoric state that comes over you somewhere between North Bend and Easton.

Forbidden Fruit
- The Wenatchee River, 1997-2007.

Crossbow
- Nymphing with your spey rod. It is kind of borderline, just like crossbows.

Magnum
- Your two-handed rod. e.g. "grab that magnum, this is a big run coming up and you'll need to be hitting long balls."

Range Ball
- A golf term, the flies you use after you run out of good ones OR the flies you tie on when you plan on losing a lot.

In the Rough
- Just like in golf, if your fly lands on the bank you are in the rough. Stay out of the rough please. If you lose a fly it is far more than a 1 stroke penalty!

Audible - When you are guiding and have to change up your play calling. Maybe you saw a fish feeding, or a good rock to cast at that you were going to cruise by. A quick change up in strategy, e.g. "grab that nymph rod quick, you will want it for that rock pile coming up".

Change Up - A super slow rise, especially after a few fast takes that messes up your timing. The kind where you set about 2 seconds before the fish even gets to your fly. Cutthroat love to throw change ups at you.

Pinch - A measurement of flies, on small flies it might be a dozen, on big bugs it is just 2-3.  "Make sure to grab a pinch or two of Caddis".

Tap Out -
What customers in a fly shop do when you are overloading them with lots of flies and want you to stop.

Natural Male Enhancement - Fishing, Hunting, driving American made 4x4's, living the dream, beers with buddies, bachelor parties, and tobacco.

Birding - what anglers are usually doing when they miss strikes in the boat.  e.g. "Are you birding or fishing today?"

Groupy - Somebody who takes too much advice from magazines, books, and tv.  Some things you just need to test, discover, and learn for yourself.

OId Timer - a term used by guides to get their guests to take them seriously.  "An old timer showed me this", that will get anyone to listen close and believe you.

Midge Cluster - A clusterf*&#k! Well that is what midge do isn't it?

Long Rod - Spey Rod.

Fire Chicken - Red spawned out salmon, they have beaks like a chicken don't they?

Boot - Tired old Chinook that doesn't fight but is really heavy.

Dime, Nickel, Penny  - Used to describe the brightness of a fish, usually steelhead.  Dimes are the best.

Nugget - Any rock that larger than the ones around it.  Usually a big boulder with a trout behind it.

Nervous Water - Water that is choppier than the other water around it.

Mud Snake - San Juan Worm, or a just worm.  Well they are kind of like snakes.

Eight Second Rule - Same as an LDR but better.  If you fight a fish for 8 seconds, it is as good as landing it.

Set the Hook - Means set the hook!, a fish is devouring your fly.

Leg Counter - Anal retentive fly tier and fisherman.  Somebody that actually thinks that having the exact number of legs, antennas, tails, or perfect color matches is critical.  They can be spotted on the river as the fisherman who are always digging into their fly boxes rather than fishing.  Anybody that uses numbers for colors of tying material, rather than a name is also a leg counter.

Hook shot - putting an aggressive hook mend into your line during the cast.  It should happen at high speed.  Works great with big flies against the bank.  It can also be used to hook your fly in behind brush that you cannot lay your line over the top of.

Created by guides everywhere, this page is a compilation of terms, phrases, jokes and writing that we have stumbled across as guides and would like to share with you. Many of these are humorous, some are real, none are boring, and all of them are useful. It was started by Joe Rotter and Johnny Boitano in their days of running Cascade Angler and it represents the humor, wit, and creativity of guides all over the world!

We did not conceive or invent everything on this page, many come from other guides and guests, but most just appear near the tail end of a six-pack of Guide Beer (see definition below!) Enjoy the humor and have fun with your vocabulary lesson!
