Local Activities

The Stuart Range and Ellensburg from Manastash Ridge.  The trailhead is near Mile Marker 22, 7 miles north of Red's Fly Shop and is a great day hike.

There is much more than just fly fishing adventures in and around Ellensburg.  From the plethora of day hikes and backpacking in the "American Alps", to the famous Labor Day Rodeo, to the restaurants, wine bars, and day spas, you will enjoy everything this western style town has to offer!  With its population of 21,000, it is big enough to offer some cultural diversity, yet small enough to preserve that "local flavor" that we all love to experience.

We are repeatedly told by customers that the restaurant scene in Ellensburg is absolutely incredible for such a small town.  From local prime cut Angus steaks, to fine pastas, or even just burgers and microbrews, Ellensburg has some premier dining.  Wine tours are available nearby in Yakima where you can taste some of the best Washington wines.

The Cascade Mountains are about 30 miles to the west of Ellensburg which creates a perfect rain shadow.  This keeps the  precipitation level somewhere around 10 inches per year with about 280 sunny days per year.

Just a short drive from town there is hiking, flyfishing (of course) skiing, snowmobiling, and plenty of ecotourism to go around.  In town, there are plenty of art galleries, museums, specialty shops, local coffee roasters, farmer's markets, and several antique stores that are sure to fill up a day or two.  During the winter, there are plenty of destinations for skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling close to town.  Another big attraction during the wintertime are the Elk Feeding Stations.  Thousands of elk migrate to both the Oak Creek and Watt Canyon feeding stations.  It is a great opportunity to see majestic bull elk up close and personal on the winter range.

Central Washington University makes up a large portion of Ellensburg and it has a beautiful campus that adds a classic college taste to the area whether you are just driving through, walking the tree lined streets near campus, attending a Wildcat football game, or going out for a glass of wine.

Some of the big events to take note of are Jazz in the Valley, which is typically the last weekend in July.  Local businesses host the best Blues bands in Washington for a weekend and it is excellent.  There is plenty of fine wine and beer to accent the great music as well.  The Labor Day Rodeo is also a major event, it is one of the best Rodeos in the country and it is a day that you and your kids will remember for years to come.  It will become easy to see why it is the signature of Ellensburg after you attend.
