The Land of Giants
There is
a place where wild 20” Rainbows are the norm and the opportunity of hooking
into a 25”+ Brown trout is not out of the ordinary. The place is fondly and
fittingly named the Land of Giants, and it is the Upper Missouri River above
Holter Dam. A few ambitious guides have gotten dialed into this remarkable
fishery, which is accessed only via jet boat.
If you’ve
been to Montana and are looking for a new experience, or planning an extended
trip and want to do something really special for a day, The Land of Giants is
a must see! These are big, feisty river trout that will double your rod tip
to the cork handle in a hard dive in one moment, and then erupt from the water
in a tailwalking display of acrobatics that must be seen to believe. We
target these “steelhead sized” trout with nymphs, dry flies – including
Caddis, Mayflies, and Hoppers – and of course streamers, which is what most of
the larger Browns are caught on. The Land of Giants fishes well all season
long, and is an exception in that it typically fishes great during the heat of
the summer when other rivers are often not productive.

Steve Joyce "I
guided on the Missouri for many years. While we all appreciate the variety of
seeing different rivers, scenery, techniques, and fish – if I could only fish
one river for the rest of my life, this would likely be the one. The largest
Brown trout I’ve seen caught on the Mo was 26”. Yeah, that’s a 2 hander…"
