The Mighty Mo
If you like the challenge
of 20 inch trout on #20 dries, the Missouri River is the river for you. The
“Mo” ranks near the top of the list (even by MT standards) in the categories
of number of fish per mile, and average size of fish – making it one of the
finest trout streams in the country. With flows regulated by upstream dams,
the fishery is very much like a giant spring creek.
Spring
and early summer provide numerous mayfly and caddis hatches to drive the
river's large rainbows and brown trout into feeding frenzies. Warm summer
weather brings morning trico hatches, hanging over the water like clouds. Big
trout cruise in their midst, slurping mouthfuls of the tiny morsels.
Grasshoppers also appear with the warmer days. The violent strikes to a hopper
imitation are in stark contrast to the subtle rises for tricos and other
smaller aquatics.
Fall
means frequent afternoon mayfly hatches dominated by the blue wing olive,
spectacular streamer and nymph fishing, and crisp, clear autumn weather. Often
the spectacular scenery of the Missouri below Holter is overlooked due to the
high quality of the fishery. But when you take time to appreciate the
surrounding landscape, you'll often want to drop your rod and grab the camera.
Fall is when the large brown trout that make this river famous sport their
most vivid colors and migrate upriver to spawn – with attitude! An
intimidating streamer pattern fished with some “mad action” has lead to many
memorable pictures!
