Rowing a River
Boat
Rowing a drift boat is not something to be taken lightly. The safety
of yourself and other passengers lies solely with the skill of the rower.
Not to mention, their fishing effectiveness too! Every guide out there
will say the same thing, a good rower is more important to success than a
good caster. With that being said, we are proud to offer Drift Boat
Rowing Lessons.
The location and experience of our fly shop is second to none when it comes
to rowing, buying, selling, or renting drift boats and rafts. With our
fly shop located on the Yakima River, there is no other shop that can match
the experience of our staff at Red's. Because of this, we are proud to
offer an "On the Water" drift boat school.
It is a 5 hour course that covers river safety, basic rowing, advanced
rowing, fishing strategies, entry/exit,
defensive rowing, anchoring, and more. This class is designed for both boat
owners and those curious about rowing rivers.
In can be done in your own drift boat, or the guide's boat or even a shop
boat. It can be a Hyde, Clackacraft, or even a framed river raft.
In the morning we will spend time setting up the boat right. This
means checking for safety issues with equipment, adjusting seats,
manifesting onboard gear, and more.
On the river, we will demonstrate the rowing techniques by rowing you down
the river! Then it will be your turn
to take the oars and under the patient and safe tutelage of our staff-pro
you will learn to row a drift boat and practice safe boat handling.
It will also cover fishing strategies from the
standpoint of rowing, boat position, anchoring, and casting angles. It is a
great class and is certain to enhance your own drift boat fishing or give
you the confidence you need to purchase, rent, or borrow a drift boat or
raft of your own.
