If there was a Trivial Pursuit game based on fly
fishing and flies, Gary Thompson would be a world champion. He constantly
impresses us with his knowledge on fishing destinations and fly fishing
gear. He has worked nearly a decade and a half in the fly fishing
business. He has also traveled to and fished many of the world’s greatest
destinations. You will easily recognize him in our fly shop as the big
guy with the gentle demeanor, hearty laugh, and cell phone in each hand.
He was born in North Dakota and raised in Kirkland. He spent 20 years in the
automotive industry and then he decided to make the big change…. to work in
the fly fishing industry was a life goal of his and he took the challenge
head on. He worked the next 10 years for Kaufman’s Streamborn in
Seattle where he became a fixture. He even commuted for years after he
and his wife Debbie decided to move to Ellensburg from North Bend following
9/11 – life is too short not to enjoy it in work, home, and play!
Red’s has been a great fit for Gary. In addition to keeping the shop functioning smoothly,
Gary takes every opportunity to guide for Carp and Trout when he’s not tying
flies. The guides routinely raid Gary’s basement for that special material
that they can’t find anywhere in Ellensburg. If a fly can be tied with it,
you will find it in Gary’s basement! He also loves to fish the high lakes
of Washington if he isn’t too busy playing with his grandkids!
