Wild
Chukar, Quail, and Hungarian Partridge Hunting
We lease approximately 15,000 acres of good Chukar, Quail, and Hungarian
Partridge habitat in the Yakima River Canyon. Although pheasant
hunting is our most popular guided adventure, we love pursuing Chukar in
this beautiful country and it is our guide's forte. With well trained
and versed pointing dogs the Red's staff is sure to give you a scenic,
productive, and satisfying adventure!
Wild Bird
Hunting Itinerary and Details
The itinerary for this program starts with an 8:45 am rendezvous at the shop. From there we travel approximately 10 minutes to our bird hunting headquarters where we will get our boots on, unload the dogs, and discuss strategy over one last cup of coffee. Depending on whether your preference is to hike a creek bottom for Quail, or take a bit more challenging trek and try for some Chukar, we may have another 15 minute drive within the boundaries of our 15,000 acre bird lease to get to the right spot. We’ll then follow the dogs through some of the prettiest sage brush and basalt country in Washington, in pursuit of Chukar partridge and Valley Quail. We’ll see some great dog work, get some good exercise, make some tough shots, miss some easy ones, and simply enjoy an experience in nature that many people have no idea even exists.
The terrain where we find birds is not just the “double black diamond” slopes. With very little hunting pressure, the birds spend lots of time on the plateaus sunning themselves. The road system on the ranch, combined with the use of our Polaris Ranger (outfitted with enclosed cab and heater), enable us to begin many of our hikes on the ridgetops. The end result is a challenging, but enjoyable hike, where we will find enough birds to keep the dogs busy and your gun barrel warm! Don’t forget your camera on this trip, as the Eaton Ranch is home to one of the largest California Big Horn Sheep populations in the country, and we often find ourselves up close and personal to these beautiful creatures.

When is
Chukar season?
Approximate season runs from early October through mid January. Check
the exact season dates at the
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Beginner Friendly
Upland Bird Hunting
At Red's, sharing our passion for bird hunting with beginners and youth is a
large part of why we do this job. The heritage of hunting is one that
should be passed down not only to the next generation, but anyone that wants

Can I bring my own dog?
You are more than welcome to bring your own dog. Just know in advance
that Chukar are a challenging quarry and there can be some great value in
utilizing our guide's dogs. As dog owners ourselves though, we know
that much of the satisfaction lies in watching your own dog do the work!

What do I need to bring
hunting?
All hunters must furnish their own shotguns and shells. We like to use
#6 shot, but please bring the ammunition that you feel most comfortable
with. An orange hunting vest, long pants, and good boots are all that is
required. On these wild bird hunts, make sure to bring a couple
bottles of water and some snack food to keep your energy level high. You
will have to have a hunting license for this hunt since we are hunting wild birds.
