"This is arguably the greatest trout fishing on earth. Never before have I seen fish that eat a mouse so willingly, but sometimes 2 or 3 times consecutively! I was in awe of the Kamchataka Penninsula, Brown Bear watching, Russian food, and catching other spectacular species like Arctic Char and Grayling. It's Russia and its incredible."

Reds Fly Shop on the Ozernaya River

Joe Rotter and Shan Sedgwick from Red's Fly Shop personally hosted our first trip to Russia together as a team.  We learned the in's and out's of the travel process, camp details, and of course the fishing which has been said to be the "World's Best Rainbow Trout Fishing".  This is a wonderful opportunity to travel with a highly experienced angler and fly fishing mentor. During this week of July the goal is target trophy Rainbows on mouse patterns and streamers. We will certainly spend time using Trout Spey tackle in addition to traditional single hand rods.  You can leave your egg patterns at home!  We have chosen the Ozernaya River Camp because of its reputation and straightforward logistics.

Mouse Fishing on the Ozernaya

The Ozernaya has been called one of the greatest trout streams of all time. The Oz is a large spring creek with an unbelievable numbers of large Rainbows averaging over 20 inches.  The OZ is easy to wade and gin clear, much of the fishing is visual.  The Ozernaya has every single ingredient for large Rainbow Trout: bugs, salmon, and a large sculpin population.

How Do We Get to Kamchatka?

Flights now need to connect through Petropavlask via Moscow. Most anglers will want to set aside some time to get a tour of the city. Why not? It's a world landmark and definitely worthy of enriching your fishing trip with a quick overnight on the way to or from.  Flights through Moscow are typically a bit less expensive than the Yacutia flight that historically ran through Anchorage, Alaska.  Once in Petropavlask you'll be greeted directly be a representative from The Best of Kamchatka.  You'll ride on a nice bus and head north up the Kamchatka Penninsula to helibase where you'll fly to the Ozernaya camp with one quick stop for fuel.  The helicopters are modern Mi-8 ships well crewed and finely tuned by a highly professional team of pilots and airmen.

Cost and Details for the Ozernaya River Camp

  • Cost $8695 per angler/ per week

The "Oz" camp hosts a maximum of 10 anglers per week in A-frame-style cabins.  They are warm, comfortable, dry, and mostly bug-free. They have electricity and wood stove heat.  In-camp amenities include a wood-fire heated shower, flush toilet, and evening campfires around a riverside fire pit that overlooks the Oz. Anglers will want to bring their own sleeping bag and mattress sheet.  Each cabin features two beds with basic mattresses.

Anglers will depart each morning and access the river with small jet boats. With this fixed-camp option, anglers have access to several dozen miles of private water both above and below the camp. The Oz is full of fat, healthy rainbows averaging 20 inches with fish in the upper 20 inch range caught each day.  It is indeed the world's best Rainbow Trout fishing.
